Railing Guide

Before designing, installing or replacing stainless steel railing, you should review the codes associated with building regulation compliance. The International Building Code (IBC) and International Residential Code (IRC) govern commercial and residential railing requirements, and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) monitors job sites to prevent accidents. Code requirements specify railing location, height, span and dimensions to ensure safety. Local codes vary, so contact your local building inspection department for information about area regulations.

Railing Types

There are three common types of railings: guard, stair and hand. A guardrail is a railing system designed to prevent anyone from falling off or over the side of a porch, balcony or raised floor. A stair rail is a guard rail that has been installed on a section of stairs. 

Required Locations

Guards are required if a standing or walking surface is 30 inches or higher than grade, according to Section 1013.1 of the IBC and Section R312.1 of the IRC. A handrail is required for stairways and ramps.

Railing Height

Guardrails must be 42 inches high, according to the IBC. In residential applications, a guardrail can't be less than 34 inches and not more than 38 inches. Section 1012.2 of the IBC mandates.
